Asda has claimed its local distribution network, which delivers locally sourced products to its stores, has saved an estimated seven million road miles in five years.
The initiative, which has been operating for five years, has 10 hubs across the UK and a further five will open in Nottingham, Leicestershire, the West Midlands, Cornwall and Yorkshire before the end of the year.
The new hubs will reduce carbon emissions by more than 10,000 tonnes, Asda said.
“Not only does our local hub initiative signal a new way in which supermarkets can work with some of the smallest UK suppliers, it also reduces our overall carbon footprint, enables us to increase the amount of local products available to our customers and makes life much simpler for hundreds of local producers,” added Richard Pearson, head of local sourcing for Asda.
