Asda has announced an expansion of its Sustain & Save Exchange, an online resource it claims will save suppliers a combined £50m by 2020.
The retailer announced this week it was opening access to the programme - which launched in 2012 and has previously been limited to fresh, chilled and frozen suppliers (the sectors with the biggest environmental impact) - to all its suppliers.
It gives suppliers a free online tool sharing ideas on improving resource efficiency and environmental impact, including workshops and visits to evaluate technologies and approaches.
Asda said more than 1,200 people from 350 different suppliers had taken part to date but an additional 95 companies had now signed up.
As well as cost saving, suppliers have also reduced environmental impact as a result - removing over 35,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from their supply chains.
“The Sustain & Save Exchange is an important Asda programme and the success of it has been far beyond our expectations, with our suppliers already making some impressive savings and improvements to their businesses,” said Asda chief merchandising officer Andrew Moore.
“We have created a valuable and credible resource for our suppliers and it’s testament to how far we’ve come that we’ve already seen an incredible amount of interest in the expansion, with 95 new companies signing up ahead of the official launch.”
