Asda is to launch a grocery delivery service with Just Eat, offering 100 “essential lines” within 30 minutes.
Asda chief executive Roger Burnley revealed the move while also announcing the rollout of a Just Eat pizza delivery service following a trial from stores in Beeston and Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and Livingston, Scotland, launched in November.
Grocery delivery will be launched from two stores - Sutton and Leicester Fosse Park - while the pizza service will be extended to 50.
“Our partnership with Just Eat that launched last year to deliver pizza direct to customers was a huge success, so much so that we’re rolling it out to up to 50 stores by the end of the year,” Burnley said yesterday.
“This project demonstrated how partnering with complimentary brands can enhance our offer to customers. As a result I am delighted to confirm that we’re extending our work with Just Eat to trial an express grocery delivery service from two stores.
“This will focus on delivering product to customers from around 100 essential lines within 30 minutes.”
Asda also announced it was to trial a wholesale retail concept called The Deal Depot at its store in Patchway, Bristol, which will cater for independent retailers.
The move comes as supermarkets increasingly look to extend into the foodservice and hospitality sector to grow profits, with Tesco rolling out its Chef Central concept, selling Booker products in bulk to trade and consumer buyers.
Burnley added: “We’re investing to innovate in our products, stores and services, and through innovation we’re ensuring the business has the ability and agility to continue to meet our customers’ needs now and into the future.”
