Sainsbury, Tesco and Morrisons have had their full range of own-label frozen and chilled desserts restored following the opening of a Scottish supplier’s new factory. Its production facilities burnt down in September.
The £2m temporary factory at Aulds Food’s Inchinnan site in Renfrewshire has bought the company a two-year window to rebuild a long-term replacement facility, said a spokesman. It plans to invest a further £6m in the new site, he added.
All 210 employees returned to work this week. It took firefighters 10 hours to put out the blaze on September 16. The cause is still not known (The Grocer, September 24, p10).
A mix of triple and double shifts will operate at the 25,000 sq ft site in order to maintain the capacity of the destroyed 100,000 sq ft facility.
“We have managed to keep all our customers. Of course we have not been able to fulfil 100% of customers’ normal requirements, but they have been very understanding,” said the spokesman.
Aulds Food, which employs a total of 900 staff, also owns 44 shops and is one of Scotland’s largest independent bakery and food businesses.
