Asda Bishopbriggs, Glasgow
0 out of stock - Good availability, pleasant staff and a clean and tidy store helped Asda net this week’s Top Store award. Our shopper was impressed by the store’s customer service team, who she said couldn’t have been more helpful. The store also boasted plenty of promotions, including price cuts on Dairy Milk and Fruits of the Forest and a four-for-£2 offer on Heinz soup. Fourteen of the store’s 20 checkouts were open, which was sufficient.
We visited on 8 August at 10.25am. Our shop lasted one hour and 22 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was five minutes.
Morrisons Bognor Regis
0 out of stock - Morrisons’ staff made a poor impression on our shopper at this Bognor Regis store. Shelf stackers swore in front of our shopper, and the checkout assistant seemed to wish she were elsewhere. Narrow and untidy aisles also made shopping at the store more difficult. However, the selection of fresh food, especially meat and fish, was excellent for a store of its size. Queues at the checkouts were short, even with only four of 12 checkouts open.
We visited on 8 August at 7.30pm. Our shop lasted 55 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was three minutes.
Sainsbury’s Burton upon Trent
1 out of stock - Our shopper praised Sainsbury’s logical layout and excellent signage. The store was let down by a number of gaps in the fruit and vegetables section, but all items except the croissants were in stock, and the store’s friendly and helpful staff offered advice on when deliveries were expected. Seven of the 33 items were on promotion, with x-for-y offers the most common. Cadbury’s Dairy Milk was on two for £2 and Whiskas catfood 3-for-2.
We visited on 8 August at 7.15pm. Our shop lasted one hour. Time spent at the checkout was three minutes.
Tesco Penarth, Glamorgan
0 out of stock - Tesco managed to provide all the items on our list. Staff were restocking the shelves at a busy time of the day, making it difficult for our shopper to get around but they were fairly helpful when asked for directions, telling her which aisle to look in. Promotions included half-price Goodfella’s pizzas at £1.14 and three-for-£1 Super Noodles. Checkout queues were short.

Waitrose Harborne, Birmingham
0 out of stock - This clean and well-stocked store had a friendly and chatty workforce who guided our shopper to items she couldn’t find. Though the store did not stock several items on the list, those that were stocked were all available, with several on promotion. Our customer also noted Beck’s, Stella and Tiger beer on three-for-two, and half-price Finish dishwasher tablets. Queue times here were the longest, despite seven of the store’s 10 checkouts being open.
