Westfalia said the acquisition would enhance its presence in the European avocado product market

Fresh produce giant Westfalia Fruit has acquired Syros, a Belgian-based manufacturer of avocado products serving the European foodservice, retail and meal box sectors.

The deal, the value of which was not disclosed, was part of “an ongoing strategy to expand the company’s global presence”, Westfalia said. The business, which operates in 17 countries across five continents, including the UK, is a major player in the avocado trade, while also selling berries and citrus fruits.

It said the purchase of Syros would “enhance Westfalia’s presence in the European market while maintaining the high standards both organisations are known for”.

Syros boasts a 30-plus year background supplying both own label and branded products such as guacamole “with a focus on convenient, healthy, and sustainable food solutions”, Westfalia added.

“This acquisition strengthens our value-added business in Europe and aligns perfectly with our growth strategy,” said Westfalia Fruit regional president for Europe Wim Destoop.

“Syros has been a trusted partner for many years, with Westfalia supplying a high percentage of their raw materials,” he added. “Their commitment to quality and sustainability mirrors our own values, making this a natural next step for both companies.”

Syros’s operations and brands, including the professional market brand Syros and consumer market brand Wonky, will now become part of Westfalia.

The acquisition also includes a significant own-label development enterprise, which revolves around creating concepts and recipes tailored to client requirements.

“For three decades, Syros has focused on ‘making food happen’ by providing flavourful, high-quality food in a sustainable way,” said the company’s CEO, Pieter Casneuf.

“Joining Westfalia, with whom we have worked together already for many years, will enable us to continue this mission with even greater capabilities and reach.”

The deal follows the appointment of ex-Tesco MD Chris Bush as Westfalia Fruit’s group CEO in October.
