The best Spar stores have been highlighted in the inaugural Spar Stars Awards ceremony in Bristol. Retail director Steve Blackmore said: "Rewarding excellence impacts on sales and margin. Research shows a good store receives 2.5 times more visits than an OK' store."
The £5,000 prize for the best independent store went to John Inglis of Spar East Street, Southampton. The judges said the busy city centre c-store was "1,500 sq ft of pure excellence with a wonderful Food to Go offer". Steven and Gillian Rigg of Spar Carnforth in Lancashire won the most improved store category.
Tates Spar in Aberystwyth won the company owned category, and the most improved store was Spar in Beddau, South Wales, owned by Capper & Co. The multi-site category was won by a Trevor Jacques store in the Midlands, Spar Lawnswood Road in Stourbridge. The most improved store was Botterills Spar in Stonefield Road, Blantyre.
A special award for outstanding customer and staff care was won by Leonard and Rosemary Wiseman of Spar Cullybackey, N. Ireland.
