Hundreds of jobs are in doubt at Cromer Crab Co after owner Young’s Seafood said the site was no longer viable.

Following a review of its shellfish manufacturing operations, Young’s intends has begun a 90-day consultation with staff pending closure of the site. Up to 230 jobs could go next year.

“The Cromer site has been struggling with inflation, industry over-capacity, new capacity coming into shellfish processing, aggressive competition, pressure on margins from promotions and customers and consumers who are looking for even better value,” said Young’s chief operating officer Pete Ward.

He said the company hoped to continue supplying products sourced from the area under the Cromer Crab brand.

Trade union Unite called the news “ a massive blow to the community”, adding that the company had been “built around a product that is part of the heritage of Cromer”.
