A man has been jailed for three years for sparking a food safety alert at Morrisons stores last August, which resulted in hundreds of products being pulled from shelves.

Shane Ward, 53, left a jar of babyfood contaminated with bleach in a jiffy bag in the fresh vegetable department of Morrisons' King's Lynn branch in Norfolk.

In a note addressed to the store manager, Ward claimed he had placed contaminated products at nine other Morrisons stores. Morrisons told Norwich Crown Court the operation to remove suspect products from sale cost 400 hours in overtime and more than £20,000 in lost business.

Ward was caught after police traced the mobile phone which was left in the package in order to open dialogue with the store to one he had bought earlier at Woolworths in Lynn.
