The company responsible for the contamination of large quantities of Bacardi Breezer with benzine in 1998 must pay £2.125m in damages.
The contamination led Bacardi-Martini and a number of soft drinks manufacturers to recall their products.
The Commercial Court ruled Terra Nitrogen should bear the whole liability. It sold CO2 contaminated with benzine to Messer UK which supplied it to Thomas Hardy Packaging which produces Bacardi Breezers.
Thomas Hardy counsel Jonathan Marks said the judgment set a precedent: "Manufacturers and suppliers will have to be careful to ensure contracts contain clauses setting out precisely where the risk of contamination should fall, so the necessary product recall insurances can be arranged."
