Bacardi has added a new ginger-flavoured golden rum.
The tipple (32% abv) was designed to tap the trend for flavoured spirits, which Bacardi said was likely to be “the next big trend to hit the rum category, thanks in part to the recent surge in popularity of pink and flavoured gins”. Bacardi Ginger rolls into grocery this week (rsp: £16.99/70cl).
There was “a real opportunity within the golden rum segment, which is growing faster than white, dark or spiced rums”, said Bacardi VP Europe Sarah Doyle. “Spirits drinkers are looking to experiment with new and interesting flavours.”
It follows the launch of Bacardi Añejo Cuatro earlier this year, a posher sipping rum designed to tap ongoing premiumisation in the sector.
However, Bacardi has faced a tough year in the UK’s supermarkets. Value sales of the brand dropped £2.18m to £110m, losing it its place as the nation’s favourite rum brand to fast-growing Captain Morgan, which grew sales £5.65m to £114m [Nielsen 52 w/e 14 July 2018].
