Scottish wholesaler Bellevue Cash & Carry is offering indies in an Edinburgh suburb cheaper prices on staple goods than at a newly opened Asda store.
Bellevue, a member of buying group Landmark Wholesale, has contacted the six independents closest to the new store in Newhaven, near Edinburgh, so its customers can save money on products ranging from Sunblest bread through to Russian Standard vodka.
Offers include a 500ml bottle of Fairy liquid for 89p, against 95p at Asda, a tub of 250g Lurpak Spreadable for £1.09 against £1.26 at Asda and a bottle of Russian Standard Vodka for £9.99 against £12.48 at Asda. In total, 12 products make up the package, which Bellevue has claimed could save shoppers £8.41.
The wholesaler has also pledged to help all independents within Asda's catchment area and not just its existing members. Although six retailers had been offered the package initially, others were expected to get in touch, the company said.
"This new Asda is clearly going to impact on local retailers in the area so we have decided to put together a retail package that we are confident will help them compete on a level playing field," said Bellevue sales and marketing director Colin Smith.
"If any retailer in the Newhaven area who is not a member of our Premier Club or a customer of Bellevue is looking for support and advice on how to deal with a supermarket opening we are happy to help," he added.
The package includes posters, shelf barkers and POS and links to Landmark Wholesale's Shop Often, Shop Local, Spend Less campaign.
Asda said Bellevue's price figures were correct, although it did not sell all of the products Bellevue was promoting.
"With Christmas coming and household budgets stretched, this can only be good news for customers," a spokesman said.
