Bestway Cash & Carry is close to completing a mammoth environmental review of its 62-depot estate.
As part of the review, started last year, the C&C giant has carried out a major lighting refit, which is nearly complete in all of its 19 Batleys depots.
Refrigeration is also being refitted to include integral freezer cases and more efficient back-up freezers and equipment in cold rooms. Power factor correction and voltage optimisation equipment surveys have also been carried out to provide additional energy savings and increase the lifespan of electrical equipment.
The refits have already led to energy savings of up to 50% in some depots where work has been completed, Batleys in Coventry achieving 50%, Batleys Leeds 40% and Bestway in Birmingham 30%.
Zahir Fazaldin, who is responsible for managing the project at Bestway, said: "There has been a great deal of work and cost in upgrading our refrigeration systems, lighting upgrades and making considerable changes to our vehicle purchasing policy. We have also encouraged staff to reduce their consumption of energy."
Bestway was awarded the Carbon Trust Standard this February for reducing its carbon emissions by 1%.
