JCR chairman Jonathan James (l) says the stores will hold a concise range tailored to shoppers who are on the move

Bestway is debuting an on-the-go Costcutter format with James Convenience Retail (JCR) as the businesses enter into a new supply partnership.

JCR chairman Jonathan James told The Grocer the new format had been designed for its transient sites located at bus stations, which can vary from 400 sq ft to 4,000 sq ft.

As well as featuring the new fascia ‘Costcutter On The Go’, the stores will hold a concise range tailored to those who are on the move, including freshly made baguettes and drinks to go, James explained.

It comes as the retailer enters into a new long-term partnership with Bestway, which will see his entire 44-strong estate convert to either Costcutter or Costcutter On The Go.

Of these, 11 are already branded Costcutter. The remaining stores are either Select Convenience, a fascia also owned by Bestway, or former Conviviality brand GT News.

The first wave of stores are set to covert to Costcutter by 1 March, with the initial Costcutter On The Go sites to open within the next 12 months.

“We are delighted to be entering a new and exciting phase of our long-term partnership with the Bestway Retail and Costcutter team,” said James. “We have already seen impressive sales uplift from the stores we have converted to the Costcutter brand, and we look forward to enjoying more success as we convert more of our convenience stores this year.

“The Costcutter brand is a hugely recognised convenience brand that shoppers recognise, trust, and have confidence in. Its grocery convenience offer is able to meet shoppers’ needs across all of their shopping missions.”

Bestway retail director Jamie Davison said: “Having known Jonathan and Mark Titterton [JCR MD] for many years, and having thoroughly enjoyed working with them and their dynamic team over the last two years, we’re delighted to have successfully demonstrated that we are best placed to partner with them as they embark on the next phase of their business evolution which underpins their ambitious growth plans.”
