Vegan street food restaurant Biff’s Plant Shack will launch its first range of retail products into 280 Waitrose stores from 6 April, including a jackfruit-based chicken wing alternative containing a “vegan bone”.
The brand said its Crispy Fried Jackfruit Wingz represented a “world first”, with the bone created using a sugarcane spear that was intended to “deliver a genuine wing-eating experience” without compromising on its plant-based status.
The Wingz (rsp: £4.50/200g) were first created at Biff’s original London street food stall, Biff’s Jack Shack, in 2017 and have remained the brand’s hero product as it expanded into both the foodservice and hospitality sectors – with listings at Greene King and BrewDog pubs among others, alongside availability via a range of home delivery operators.
Other products in the brand’s six-strong chilled Waitrose range include Crispy Fried Jackfruit Burgers (rsp: £4.50/228g), Smoky Chilli Cheeze Waffle Fries (rsp: £3.95/400g), Banging Bhaji Loaded Fries (rsp: £3.95/400g) and two plant-based sauces (rsp: £2.50/250ml).
“At a time when shoppers are craving more vibrant flavours, authentic brands and restaurant-style experiences at home, our genuine street food heritage and innovative products – including the UK’s first proper vegan wing with a ‘bone’ – means we’re uniquely positioned to bring a vegan street food range to shelf that’s bold, authentic and commercially proven,” said Biff’s CEO Andrew Allen.
Both the Crispy Fried Jackfruit Wingz and Burgers are made from 50% jackfruit combined with natural flavourings, herbs and spices. The brand said this ingredient mix “demonstrated that plant-based comfort food doesn’t have to include a slew of unrecognisable ingredients”.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Waitrose to bring this to life and give the opportunity for new and loyal Biff’s fans to cook their first Biff’s Plant Shack meals at home,” added Allen.
