Escalating gas bills have forced one English glasshouse tomato grower to set up production in Poland.
Cheshire producer Philip Pearson claims he has watched his annual gas bills rise from £85,000 in 1996 to £300,000 today.
He says cheaper alternatives to gas in Poland, such as coal, makes fuel prices more competitive.
Pearson has completed his first season of shipping tomatoes to UK retailers. He said his decision to switch to Poland had proved justified commercially, although set up costs had been high.
