Sainsbury's has appointed a new head of asset management, with responsibility for getting the best value out of its property portfolio.

Matthew Birch joins Sainsbury's after five years as property director for Tchibo, where he grew store numbers from 18 to 74. He take over from Colin Taylor, who has decided to pursue a consultancy career.

"Matt brings with him great hands-on experience," said Peter Baguley, Sainsbury's property director.

Birch added: "With the momentum generated by Sainsbury's recovery, this has to be one of the most

exciting places to be right now, especially within the property team."
