Birds Eye, the frozen foods brand acquired last year by private equity group Permira from Unilever, is closing its factory in Hull with the loss of 490 jobs.
The company blamed inheriting a business with “unsustainable over-capacity” for the closure. Production will transfer to factories in Bremerhaven, Germany and Lowestoft, Suffolk.
“We will mount a vigorous campaign to stop this work being moved to Germany,” said John Wilson, senior organiser for the GMB union, which has predicted closer to 600 redundancies.
