Asda has appointed Andy Bond chief operating officer as part of a senior management team restructure.
Formerly, trading director for non-food, he will be responsible for retail and logistics and continues his role with Global George and his chairmanship of property developer Gazeley, owned by Asda parent Wal-Mart.
He takes the post vacated by Richard Baker, now chief executive of Boots, who left in May 2003. Bond has been with Asda for 10 years and previously worked with Hopkins and British Gas. He said: “This is a great opportunity to take on a broader role and now I have
responsibility for a range of operations it will be an exciting challenge. Taking responsibility for the lion’s share of our 120,000 people is a privilege.” Further restructuring follows the promotion of director of logistics David Cheesewright to chief operating officer of Wal-Mart Canada in June.
Retail director David Downie takes Cheesewright’s post.
The regional managing director for the north division, Tony Page, will join the executive board as non-food director to lead the George UK, GM, new business and speciality areas. He will be replaced by Sally Hopson, who has been appointed Asda’s first woman regional managing director following two years driving ‘people policies’.
Commercial finance director Steve Makin is promoted to the operating board.
