Booker has created a new foodservice business, dubbed Chef Direct.
The new arm will start trading in June, serving the cash & carry giant’s major foodservice customers from a state-of-the art distribution centre in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
It will combine Booker’s scale and logistics capabilities with the expertise in catering and speciality foods from its Ritter-Courivaud business, the wholesaler said.
The news came as Booker unveiled bumper like-for-like sales growth of 6.5% in the 16 weeks to 30 December.
Total sales in the quarter rose 7%, with non-tobacco sales up 6.7% and tobacco sales up 7.6%. Fresh departments chalked up strong growth, with fruit and vegetable sales up 17%.
“Amid the challenging economic environment Booker continues to improve choice, prices and service for our customers,” said Booker chief executive Charles Wilson.
“Our plans to focus, drive and broaden the group are on track and we are pleased to be developing Chef Direct to serve major foodservice customers.”
