Northern supermarket chain Booths is to submit fresh plans for a new store in Barrowford, Lancashire, in a bid to overcome local opposition to the development. The chain's original plans for the store were rejected by the local council in February after a storm of protest from residents who claimed it would result in increased traffic and parking problems. Booths is set to submit a second proposal in which the size of the store has been reduced from 13,000 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft and the number of car parking spaces increased from 85 to 98. "Booths has taken the opportunity, since it was turned down, to learn more about local issues. Throughout this process it has received a great deal of support for a Booths food store," said a spokeswoman. Meanwhile, Booths is sending staff on cookery courses to enable them to become "specialist food advisers". It has appointed local cookery expert Philippa James to run the programme, which will focus on cheese counters this year.
