Ranjit Singh Boparan scooped The Grocer Cup for Outstanding Business Achievement at yesterday’s IGD Food Industry Awards.
The 2 Sisters Food Group owner pipped Diageo boss Paul Walsh and Morrisons CEO Dalton Philips to bag the accolade - voted for by our readers - following an active year for the company.
During the past year, Boparan has been busy integrating Northern Foods with 2 Sisters after snapping up the business from under Greencore’s nose in spring 2011. He’s also picked up some sizeable contracts such as a £4m contract to supply Morrisons with chilled fish - a first for 2 Sisters - as he eyes £3bn in sales by 2015.
The creation of a new cakes division in May, incorporating all of 2 Sisters’ chilled desserts, cakes and puddings operations suggests Boparan has big ambitions for the category.
“Ranjit’s move to acquire Northern, and his vision to create the UK’s biggest supplier, was brave and bold,” said Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer. “But with his relentless focus on customer service, he’s won a lot of new business from retailers, and is starting to repay the City’s faith in his ability to deliver.”
