Borna Foods is hoping to challenge the dominance of oat milk with a duo of pistachio milks.
The brand has rolled out two variants – lightly sweetened and unsweetened – which are touted as a source of calcium and contain added vitamin B12, into Amazon and Ocado, with further retail listings to follow (rsp: £1.99/500ml).
The lightly-sweetened SKU was previously a wholesaler-only product - although it appeared in Whole Foods Market’s veganuary range last year.
Pistachios were “historically deemed too pricey for the UK’s increasingly avant-garde alternative milk fixture”, said the brand.
However, with oat milks dominating the market, it “soon came clear that for nut milks to return to the dizzy heights of yesteryear that [Borna] needed to pin their hopes on a nut brimming with gastronomic allure”.
The result was “a dense, velvety-textured nut drink that’s low in calories yet high in fibre and good nutrition”.
To make the drinks, pistachios are roasted to impart flavour but retain the green colour of the nuts. They are then turned into a pistachio butter and processed before adding water and sold. Finally, the liquids are filtered and pasteurised before packing.
