CCEP has recalled 600ml bottles of its Schweppes posh 1783 Crisp Tonic mixers amid fears incorrectly fastened bottle closures could pop off unexpectedly.
An email from Ocado to consumers who bought the bottles of the drink, seen by The Grocer, stressed the quality of the drink was not affected, but that “the incorrect application of some closures could cause a small number of them to pop off the bottle unexpectedly”.
The issue is affecting only 600ml bottles with a best before date of up to and including 31 March 2019. No other Schweppes products are affected.
A spokeswoman for CCEP said any consumer who had purchased one of the bottles should “ensure that they open it facing away from them, as they would a bottle of sparkling wine” or alternatively should contact CCEP’s customer service team to be reimbursed with a product voucher.
“The safety and quality of our products is of paramount importance to us and we do all we can to ensure they reach people in perfect condition. We are sorry that on this occasion a small number of our products have not met our required standard and for any inconvenience this causes.”
It comes as Schweppes has this month extended its 1783 range with a new Muscovado flavour designed to pair especially with darker spirits such as whisky and rum. It will roll out in 600ml ‘skittle’ bottles from the end of summer (rsp: £1.92).
