The first British asparagus of the season has been made available for local shoppers

Shoppers at M&S Hereford will be able to buy British asparagus in time for Christmas, well ahead of the normal season.

The first British asparagus of the season from Herefordshire asapargus producer Wye Valley Produce, which is owned by the Chinn family, has been made available for local shoppers.

The initial harvest is a limited edition, representing the early pickings from young crowns, which will mature in coming years to yield larger volumes.

“This delicious British asparagus, arriving before Christmas, is a fantastic example of the great quality and value M&S is known for,” said Kenny MacLeod, M&S produce trading manager. “Thanks to our close partnership with Wye Valley Farm, we’re able to bring our Hereford customers a special seasonal treat.”

The Chinns have been pioneers of the aspargus industry, developing sustainable growing methods and experimenting with varieties to extend the season.

“This especially early crop is the product of innovative methods at Wye Valley Farm, and environmental sustainability is a key focus for us,” said Chris Chinn of Wye Valley Produce. “We are absolutely delighted to supply M&S Hereford with early-season British asparagus.”
