The British Egg Industry Council has launched a major new campaign demanding food businesses drop dual standards on egg purchasing and ‘Back British Eggs’.
The campaign includes a manifesto for change called the Manifesto for Eggcellence.
It includes a call for food businesses to stop using imported eggs in food made in the UK, and a stop on the use of the Union Flag on products made using imported eggs.
The industry body is also calling for labelling of eggs’ country of origin on products manufactured in the UK, and for the government to deprioritise companies that use imported eggs in products destined for public procurement.
“By consistently sourcing from abroad, food businesses are not only disappointing their shoppers, but also increasing food miles and undermining British farmers,” said BEIC chairman Mark Williams. “This stops British egg producers investing in the future, putting domestic production at risk when consumers would like to see it increase.”
In an open letter to the food industry introducing the manifesto, the BEIC said shoppers are clear about where they want their eggs from and called on the food industry to stop using different standards and back British.
“Backing British Eggcellence means being proud of your sourcing, putting shoppers first, embracing world-leading food safety assurance and supporting farmers,” said Williams.
“It’s time for a change. It’s time to back British Eggcellence and start sourcing British eggs for British-made food. It’s the right thing to do.”
