The British Egg Industry Council has pledged to donate British Lion eggs to a not-for-profit initiative which aims to supply food parcels to NHS workers.

HelpNHSHeroes, which has been trialled in pop-up shops at two hospitals in Stevenage and Reading, sells boxes to workers for £30. BEIC has supported the trial and will now be involved in its nationwide expansion to more than 40 NHS sites.

The boxes are designed to provide meals for a family of four for two days, and cover all nutritional needs including protein, carbohydrates and fruit and vegetables.

NHS staff order the boxes on a bespoke app and can pick them up at the end of their shift. Meanwhile, shift workers on back-to-back shifts are being given free breakfasts as part of the scheme.

“HelpNHSHeroes is a vital initiative to help give NHS workers easy access to food and to feed their families,” said BEIC chairman Andrew Joret.

“We are delighted that Lion eggs can play a part in easing the load on our essential workers and we are keen to support the campaign as it rolls out to more hospitals.”

The initiative’s founder, Jason Mawer, described BEIC’s support as “invaluable”.
