Buffalo milk has hit the shelves in two branches of Waitrose.

The stores, in Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard, are the first in the country to stock the premium range product.

The milk is produced by local farmer Nick Griffin, who swapped his conventional cows for a herd of water buffalo in 1998.

The product, which is described as creamier than Jersey cows’ milk but with a fraction of the cholesterol, is going on sale as part of Waitrose’s ‘locally produced’ initiative.

n Wyke success

Best Cheddar and butter at this year’s Nantwich International Cheese Show was from Somerset farmhouse cheese maker Wyke Farms, Wyke Champflower, Bruton.

The butter award came immediately after taking two Gold medals for unsalted and salted at the Royal Welsh Show.

Two cheeses made at ACC Milk’s Llandyrnog Creamery also won awards at Nantwich. The single mature cheddar cheese was awarded first prize in the Texel Challenge Trophy. Another mature Cheddar was also commended.
