In what's unquestionably the most dramatic food'n'drink story of the day, the Guardian reports on an international row brewing after horrified US campaigners/killjoys realised Fentimans Victorian lemonade contains (a very small amount of) alcohol. The Daily Express also has the story.

In more serious mood, the Guardian says Tesco has ruled out buying the ‘good bits’ of Northern Rock and will instead look to develop its ambitious banking plans organically.

The Daily Telegraph, meanwhile, looks back on yesterday’s news about Tesco’s plans to create 1,000 new banking jobs in Newcastle – home of Northern Rock, of course.

And the Telegraph returns to the difficulties plaguing Threshers owner First Quench Retailing, which looks closer than ever to falling into administration after admitting it’s looking at its “restructuring options”.

Back with the Express, the paper’s business section says investors on the stock exchange have been consolidating their portfolios by buying into the likes of Tesco and Morrisons, which are regarded as relatively safe bets in the current times.

In the wake of further losses for Bernard Matthews (the company), Bernard Matthews (the bloke) is stepping down as chairman. The Times has the story.

It also picks up on claims by the government’s top drugs expert that cigarettes and alcohol are more damaging than the likes of ecstasy and acid. Presumably that means the former two are now more likely to be banned, rather than the latter two being decriminalised.

Talking of cigarettes, the Financial Times reports that BAT is standing its ground on planned price increases despite a fall in sales for the tobacco giant.
