Front-page news today in the Daily Express is that we’re set for a spate of salmonella thanks to “poison eggs” from abroad – Spain, to be precise.

The paper claims that dodgy imports are behind a tripling of salmonella cases this year, including possible links to two deaths,

As almost all of our shelled eggs we eat in this country are British, this isn’t necessarily the apocalyptic news the paper might have you believe. But it’s not good for the foodservice sector, where only 40%-50% of the eggs used are British.

The paper quotes British Egg Industry Council chairman Andrew Parker as saying: “It is because our Government won’t take a firm hand in this that we continue to have the problems.

“It is up to the government to speak to the Spanish government and say ‘enough is enough’. What we do expect is them to take steps to ensure we have eggs free from salmonella coming into this country.”
