British raspberry growers are predicting a bumper crop for 2015, up 31% on last season to 14,000 tonnes.
British Summer Fruits said a surge in demand for the fruit had led growers to plant more, while favourable weather and investment in new breeding programmes had helped extend the growing season and contribute to a 50% increase in yields since 2010.
Sales had also risen, jumping by 16% to £183m [Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e 21 June 2015], with more robust berries able to retain their quality on supermarket shelves, said BSF chairman Laurence Olins.
“The rising popularity of British raspberries is due to the high quality of varieties that are being produced,” he added. “The varieties available are now stronger than they were five years ago and consumers are confident in the quality of the product.”
