Burton’s Biscuit Company is investing almost £15m in its manufacturing sites.
The business – producer of brands including Wagon Wheels, Maryland Cookies and Jammie Dodgers – is looking to increase output with the £14.75m spend, which will span its sites in Llantarnam, Blackpool and Edinburgh, as well as its chocolate refinery in Moreton.
Burton’s said its ambition was to grow through new products and formats, which it would aim to roll out to new and growing markets “through pioneering technology and enhanced manufacturing capabilities”.
Part of the investment will be used to build on the company’s savoury snack capabilities following the rollout of Cathedral City Baked Bites and Fish ‘n’ Chips. The company will also invest in its Cookie Centre of Excellence at Blackpool to “enable it to produce cookie variants for tastes from all corners of the world”; and develop its packaging capabilities to meet growing demand for snacks on the go such as portion packs.
“This increased investment in manufacturing is a driving force behind the company’s ambitions to expand the footprint of its brands – domestically and internationally – through new products and formats, as well as expanding our distribution base,” said Burton’s chief supply chain officer Neil Grocock.
“We’re launching some of the most innovative products in the marketplace, and investing in our capabilities enables us to bring these new products to market quicker than any other company in the market.”
The spend follows Burton’s £13.75m investment in its supply chain in 2013, and £12.5m in 2012.
