Family-owned dairy Butlers saw its new product go all the way in this year's Tesco Cheese Challenge.
Now in its fourth year, the competition brought together cheese industry experts in London where they picked out Butlers Blue as their favourite from 24 brand new cheeses, none of which are yet listed by a major multiple.
Unlisted cheesemakers submitted entries alongside established brands, including Milk Link and Butlers, which already produces 1,400 tonnes of territorial cheese a year for Asda, M&S, Tesco and Sainsbury.
Butlers' new cheese, which is a six-week old creamy young blue, should be available in Tesco nationwide by October, said Butlers' product development manager Bronwen Coward. At present it is only sold in farmers' markets.
Systems were already in place to supply a multiple, she added. Tesco's cheese expert Alain Guilpain said: "Blue cheeses are incredibly popular with customers and they can't get enough of them."
