Cadbury has been caught up in the Chinese milk scandal amid fears that chocolates made by the confectionery giant could be contaminated with melamine.

It emerged yesterday that Cadbury had recalled around a dozen types of chocolate made at its Beijing factory after the company’s own tests “raised doubts” over the items’ safety.

Production at the factory, which makes chocolates for export to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia, has temporarily been halted.

The contamination of milk from more than 20 Chinese dairies with the industrial chemical melamine has so far led to illness in thousands of babies and a handful of deaths.

Earlier this month Tesco withdrew from its shelves a range of Chinese sweets containing dairy products that could have been exposed to contamination.
