Cadbury has removed one Twirl from its 10-finger multipacks amid record-high cocoa costs.
It has replaced the old 10x21.5g packs with 9x21.5g ones. Despite this reduction in pack weight, shelf prices have stuck at £3 in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, according to The Grocer’s analysis of Assosia data [12 w/e 5 March 2025].
When approached by The Grocer, Cadbury owner Mondelez confirmed the move.
“We understand the economic pressures consumers continue to face and any changes to our product sizes is a last resort for our business,” said a spokesman for the manufacturer.
“However, as a food producer, we are continuing to experience significantly higher input costs across our supply chain, with ingredients such as cocoa and dairy, which are widely used in our products, costing far more than they have done previously.”
While Mondelez had “absorbed these costs where possible, we still face considerable challenges”, said the spokesman.
“As a result of this difficult environment, we have had to make the decision to slightly reduce the weight of our Cadbury Twirl single-finger multipacks so that we can continue to provide consumers with the brands they love, without compromising on the great taste and quality they expect.”
Morrisons declined to comment, while Tesco and Sainsbury’s had not responded at the time of writing.
Mondelez recently replaced 110g packs of Cadbury Crunchie Rocks, Twirl Bites, Bitsa Wispa and Oreo Bites with 100g versions, as reported by The Grocer.
The manufacturer also cited “significantly higher input costs” as its reason for shrinking these sharing pouches.
Its move to reduce pack weights comes after cocoa commodity prices hit record-breaking highs in 2024, following a poor crop in west Africa.
