Beer buyers have hit back at claims by the Campaign for Real Ale that retailers have poor knowledge of bottled ales.
CAMRA also claims some beer buyers “don’t even drink beer” and attacked supermarkets for failing to support British beer. It said supermarkets in London gave bottled British beers just 6% of the space in the beer and wine aisles compared with 19% for canned beers.
Robin Forshaw Wilson, CAMRA’s London regional director, said: “A couple of chains are clearly making an effort but the majority only stock one or, at the most two, bottled real ales and some stock none. Many beer buyers have little or no knowledge of bottled beers and some don’t even drink beer.
Glenn Payne, Safeway’s head beer buyer, said: “The top four retailers have enthusiastic beer buyers who are supportive. If CAMRA has any ideas about how we could sell more ale, I’d be delighted to meet with them.”
