South African produce exporter Capespan is renewing efforts to market a seedless lemon.
The company is in talks with the multiples over a listing for its product, which it guarantees to be 100% seed-free, in contrast with some of the offers on the market.
"Several suppliers made a lot of noise about the seedless lemon a couple of years ago," said Capespan trading director Martin Dunnett.
"Waitrose launched it in 2005, but couldn't guarantee there were no seeds."
Morrisons is looking like the most probable outlet for the variety, which Capespan can supply exclusively in the UK in volumes of 5,000 to 10,000 cartons, Dunnett added.
"We took a couple of cartons into the buyer, and he went through each lemon with a knife looking for seeds. He bet us £50 he'd find at least one - if only it were always that easy to make money!"
The lemons are supplied by a single South African grower.
