Carlsberg has said it is “deeply saddened” by an ammonia gas leak at its Northampton brewery yesterday that caused the loss of one life.

The brewer confirmed the incident, which saw 11 employees and 11 members of the emergency services being taken to hospital, was confined to the Carlsberg UK premises, and that there was no “wider risk” to members of the public beyond the site.

One of the employees remains in a “serious but stable” condition, with all other individuals released from hospital yesterday.

Carlsberg, which said production at the brewery had been stopped while the investigation took place and would not be able to provide any further comment while this was ongoing, said its immediate thoughts were with the individual’s family, friends and colleagues at this “very difficult time”.

“Nothing is more important to us than the safety of everyone working for us,” said CEO Julian Momen. “We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how this incident occurred and we will be in a position to say more once a full investigation has been concluded,” he added.
