Carlsberg wants to learn about cider

Carlsberg UK has become a member of the UK cider industry body the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM).

The brewer, which admitted it was a relative newcomer to the cider industry having launched its Somersby Cider in July 2012, said that joining the NACM would mean it could learn from other cider makers as well as demonstrating its commitment to the category.

“Our experience in beer and the wider alcohol market means we can hopefully make a contribution to the NACM and producers of all scales,” said Bruce Ray, corporate affairs director.

“We also consider ourselves as leaders in responsible drinking through close relationships with government, the wider industry and Drinkaware and hope we can share this expertise with the NACM.”

Somersby scored only £2.4m in its first year despite a heavy marketing campaign, but has seen sales pick up in the last quarter.

NACM chairman Paul Bartlett said that Carlsberg’s considerable experience, insight and resource would be of benefit to the whole cider industry and the NACM was pleased it would be adding to the industry’s “significant” ongoing investment.

“To have an industry giant like Carlsberg UK on board is a strong indicator of the increasing confidence in the cider industry as it continues to grow,” Bartlett said.

The NACM is planning to plant 2,000 acres of new orchards over the next two years to boost the current 17,300 acres of orchards. At present, the industry is worth £3bn in the UK and uses around 250,000 British apples.
