Central England Co-operative has banned the sale of single-use plastic bags in its food stores.
The action, which coincides with World Environment Day (5 June), applies across 244 stores and aims to save 12 million pieces of single-use plastic per year.
A 10p biodegradable bag for life or a compostable alternative will be offered instead, the retailer said.
The society also reported a 70% reduction in its carbon footprint since 2010 due to a combination of energy-efficient technologies including LED lighting, solar panels and the addition of chiller doors.
“As a responsible business, we are committed to minimising our impact on the environment,” said Luke Olly, Central England Co-op energy and environment lead.
“We will continue to work on our long-term focus areas, aligned with UN Sustainable Development goals, which are to mobilise on climate change, minimise plastics impact, collaborate on waste, facilitate accessible sustainable products, improve community air quality and protect water resources.”
