It also relaunched more than 40 food stores following a major refit programme

Central England Co-op ploughed more than £8m into its estate last year.

It opened three new food stores, a new coffee shop at its flagship Boley Park site in Lichfield, and a new florists under its funeralcare business within the Wildwood food store in Stafford.

It also relaunched more than 40 food stores following a major refit programme. These sites spanned areas such as Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Norfolk, Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

They now offer shoppers a more expansive range of products and are fitted out with new energy-efficient refrigeration technologies and LED lighting to minimise their environmental impact, while all stores are powered by 100% renewable energy. This forms part of its plan to achieve a 90% reduction in its carbon footprint by 2030.

Many of the stores also include enhanced food-to-go sections, indoor and outdoor seating, bike repair stations and customer toilets, and rollouts of self-scan till points.

A second zero waste refill station in Littleover, Derbyshire was also installed. The society said it had more planned for 2022, along with futher refits and bolstering its estate with more new stores.

“All of us here at Central England Co-op across our trading area are proud to be part of such great communities,” said store manager Natalie Smith. “And the investment in new and revamped, more modern food stores in the last 12 months has given everyone a real boost in these uncertain times.”
