Cheap Christmas veg wars: Asda, Aldi and Lidl slash prices to 8p

The Christmas veg price wars are in full swing, with four supermarkets announcing new cuts in quick succession today, to as little as 8p. 

Morrisons was first out of blocks by announcing four festive lines cut to 10p this morning – undercutting 15p promises last week from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi and Lidl.

Asda quickly answered Morrisons by slashing its prices further to take them to 10p too.

Next Lidl undercut them all by going deeper on its discounts, to 9p. The cut brought the price of Lidl’s value Christmas dinner for six, which it unveiled last week, down to £11.

Minutes later, Aldi followed suit by cutting its six reduced festive veg lines to 9p too. In a double whammy, Aldi also uneviled the lowest-priced value Christmas dinner package so far. Feeding six people for a total of £10.80, it consists of a small fresh turkey, stuffing mix, gravy granules, Yorkshire puddings and four of Aldi’s 9p veg lines: potatoes, brussels sprouts, carrots and parsnips.

Asda was the first to go further still on its cheap Christmas veg lines, dropping them to 8p this afternoon – only for Aldi to copy the move, taking its veg prices down another penny to 8p too.

And than – wait for it – Lidl did the same thing, bringing the number of supermarkets offering 8p Christmas veg to three. 

No one could blame consumers for not being able to keep up. To make matters worse, not all of the supermarkets are offering discounts on the same number of festive veg lines, or the same type, or even to the same shoppers, with some available only to loyalty scheme members.
