The new period care range is listed by Ocado

Sustainably minded paper goods maker The Cheeky Panda has moved into period care with a range of biodegradable pads and liners.

Made from bamboo, the lineup comprises Panty Liners (rsp: £2.25/18) and three Period Pad variants (rsp: £2.75): Light Flow (15), Heavy Flow (12) and Night (10).

The range of pads was suitable for sensitive skin, and their “naturally antibacterial properties reduce odour without chemical additives”, said the brand.

All lines are wrapped in biodegradable cornstarch and will be available on Ocado from today (14 April). The products are billed as “an effective and sustainable alternative” to traditional period products, which can take up to 500 years to fully decompose.

They were the UK’s first pads with a bamboo core, the patent for which was currently pending, The Cheeky Panda claimed.

The “super-absorbent” bamboo, which also featured in the “kind-to-skin” top layer, replaced the synthetic polymers typically used in pads, the brand added.

Some newer alternatives used wood pulp, which was “a step toward sustainability”, said The Cheeky Panda. But it required cutting down trees that could take decades to grow.

By contrast, bamboo was “one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth and can be harvested frequently without depleting resources”, the business added.
