Supermarket price wars continue to drive deflation on fresh and chilled foods.
Data from mySupermarket revealed average retail prices for fresh and chilled meat fell in March 2015, with fresh whole chickens showing the biggest year-on-year decline (-39%), followed by fresh beef (-15%), fresh chicken pieces (-15%) and minced beef (-7.4%). There were also price drops across fish, yoghurt, processed meat and veg.
However, burgers and beef sausages bucked the trend, with average prices rising 1.72% year on year. There were also some increases across the fruit category, particularly on bananas (+8%), cut-up mixed fruit (+3%) and fruit yogurt (+3%).
