A leading food safety expert from Queen’s University, Belfast, has been appointed by Defra to head up a year-long review of the UK’s food system in light of the horsemeat scandal.
Professor Chris Elliott, director of the university’s institute for global food security, will examine how the government, industry and other stakeholders can improve the food supply chain’s resilience to fraud and restore consumer confidence.
“I’m very much looking forward to working to ensure that what we eat continues to have the high levels of safety we expect and that our food is authentic and free from adulteration,” he said.
The review will kick off shortly and will run for nine to 12 months. Elliott will provide an interim report to Defra in December, with the final report to be published in spring 2014.
