The shake-up of senior management at Tesco stepped up this week as the names of two senior executives leaving the retailer emerged.
Christophe Roussel, the Frenchman who has been leading the F&F clothing and general merchandise sourcing and supply chain at Tesco, is among those leaving the company, after 11 years.
Sources said Roussel had been instrumental in the development of non-food at the retailer.
“During his time at Tesco, Roussel has developed a real ‘state of the art’ sourcing company,” said one source. “He is well known in the industry for his rigour and passion to work only with suppliers and factories that make Tesco products adhering to the code of conducts and local regulations.”
Others pointed out that, under his tenure, Tesco had avoided any of the scandals and tragedies many of its competitors had been caught up in, in China and Bangladesh in particular.
Separately, US discounter Target has named Tesco’s tech chief, Mike McNamara, as its new chief information officer. McNamara, who held the same position at Tesco, where he has worked since 1998, will replace the retiring Bob DeRodes and report to CEO Brian Cornell.
His departure from Tesco comes with CEO Dave Lewis already overseeing a major cull of senior staff as he seeks to slash the management overheads at its HQ by 30%. McNamara had been a member of Tesco’s executive committee since March 2011.
“Tesco is a world-class brand and I’m grateful for the time I spent there,” said McNamara.
Last week, thousands of Tesco head office staff began finding out their fate as the retailer pushed ahead with a cull of management positions under Lewis’s plans to slash head office costs by 30% as part of his £250m cutbacks.
