With harvesting due to start in May, the Brazilian orange crop has been forecast to be 10-15% less this season accounting for some 369 million carton equivalents.
While a high proportion goes for processing, some fresh fruit is traded internationally. The reason, according to the Brazilian Institute of Agriculture Economy, is the effect not just of dry weather but lack of funds by smaller growers to fund irrigation and fertilisers.
