The reputation of Israel's famous thick skinned shamouti orange variety which gave Jaffa its name has been diminishing because of too much Class II fruit entering the system, according to Reuven Andorn, Agrexco's citrus account manager.
He made the claim in Agrexco's own widely distributed trade newsletter.
Since deregulation, Agrexco, also known for its Carmel label, has been able to become an independent citrus exporter.
Andorn said that to improve the situation, for the first time its citrus fruit would be sold under a specially selected Carmel A shamouti brand.
It will be working with the Redbridge Group and an estimated 10,000 cartons of Carmel A will pass through Tilbury for direct delivery this season.
