Cuban oranges may weather the storm
While assessment of damage levels of the Cuban citrus industry is still difficult to assess following one of the worst hurricanes in its history this week, the initial impact on the UK should be minimal.
Prag Mistry, category manager for importer Hart and Friedmann, confirmed that an excellent early grapefruit season had all but finished with shipments of over 2,000t of red, pink and white varieties.
"Cuban oranges do not get under way for Europe until December through January so by then we will have a much clearer picture," he said. "There are vast areas of orchards and while some will obviously have been affected, we would expect others to have escaped."
