What was your first job? An apprentice at Beckets Well Trout Farm in Sevenoaks, Kent. Give us a quick run-down of your career to date. I went to college in Scotland to learn about fish farming. I then took a job at Kimbridge in the Test Valley, supposedly for six months. Fifteen years later, after running the farm, I moved into sales and marketing at Silver Trout. I then moved into local produce in the New Forest and set up the New Forest Marque accreditation scheme. I was amazed by the set up at New Forest Barramundi and got back into fish. How did you get where you are today? I was approached by New Forest Barramundi and realised it was my future. What is the best decision you have made in your career? Coming to work for New Forest Barramundi. Who do you most admire in the grocery industry? Honest people. Do you have a mentor and how have they helped you in your career? I'd like to think I've learnt from everything I've done and everyone I've worked with. What is the most important piece of information you have ever been told? My late father told me to be hard-working and honest. If you could change one thing in the grocery industry what would it be? I would like to see more clarity in the marketplace as there are many excellent products that never make it. What is most rewarding part of your job? Meeting the public and seeing how much they love the taste of our product. If you could start your career again, what would you do differently and why? I would have moved on from being a farm manager earlier in order to gain more experience. Do you think you'll always work in grocery? Absolutely - it's in my blood. What advice would you give to someone starting out? Be structured in your approach, and always be straight with people. What do you like doing when you are not working? I love spending time with my young sons and I also play a bit of football. Where do you hope to be in five years time? I would like to think that I'll be leading the sales of a successful company.
